Five signs you might need a new coach

Five signs you might need a new coach

  1. You’re receiving the same programming as everyone else; your plan is not in any way tailored to you.
  2. When you ask them why you’re doing something, they can’t give you an answer. I always like to explain the “why” behind an exercise, especially for my runners. If you don’t know WHY you’re giving a client or athlete a particular workout, should you really be giving it to them?
  3. Things seem random: it doesn’t appear that there’s any progression to your program. Progressive overload is possibly THE most important part of a weight training or running program. If you’re not progressing speed, distance, weight, reps, sets, etc… then you’re plateauing. And random exercises each week without any reasoning behind them aren’t going to get you anywhere.
  4. There are no tweaks to your plan due to injury, overtraining, travel, etc. Part of the benefit of hiring a coach is hiring someone who knows how to work around your schedule to create you the most successful plan, even through typical life events. If your coach is unwilling to make tweaks here and there, they aren’t doing their due diligence.
  5. Nutrition/fueling isn’t part of the equation. Your coach may not be a dietician, but they should be aware of the basics of fitness nutrition and fueling and if they’re not, they should have someone easily accessible to refer out to.
